xTool F1 Laser Engraver vs. Fiber Laser Automation: A Buyer's Honest Take for Small Shops
The best laser setup for a small manufacturing shop is rarely one machine. After five years of ordering equipment for a 40-person product development and small-batch production company, I have landed on a simple conclusion: match the process to the material and volume, not the most impressive spec sheet. For us, that meant buying an xTool F1 laser engraver for prototyping, adding an xTool screen printing frame for repeat textile runs, and using an outside fiber laser service for metal marking until volume justified real fiber laser automation.

The fiber source marks metals; the diode handles wood, acrylic, leather, and coated materials. For a shop that regularly hears “Can you engrave 30 of these stainless steel tags?”, it is a workhorse.
Did it replace our outside fiber laser service? No. The F1's marking area is small, and cycle times add up when you need 200 parts. But it replaced the one-off conversation. Not ideal for production, but workable.
2. Fiber laser automation and the SLTL Elite
Fiber laser automation means a fiber laser set up to run repetitive marks with minimal supervision—typically over a conveyor or indexing fixture, with programming and safety interlocks. The SLTL Elite laser marking machine fits that class: industrial, galvo-driven, built for serial numbers and logos on metal parts.
We did not buy one. The trigger for us would be one part needing the same mark hundreds of times per week, plus an operator who owns the program. When I got a quote in late 2024, the total installed cost was more than ten times the F1. That is not a complaint. It is a volume decision.
Here is something vendors will not tell you: the quote for an industrial laser is the beginning. Fixturing, extraction, training, and downtime all get attached later. The question is not “Which is better?” It is “Which one pays for itself in your building?”
3. CO2 laser result vs. screen printing frame
Now the part that confuses buyers. A CO2 laser result is not the same as a diode or fiber result on non-metallics. On 6mm acrylic, a CO2 laser produces a polished, flame-edged cut. The same design with a diode can look cloudy unless you dial settings carefully. If your product line is acrylic or wood, you may need a CO2 machine even if the brand also sells a nice fiber/diode combo.
For textiles, the story changes. If you are printing the same logo on 50 or more shirts, screen printing with an xTool screen printing frame can beat laser engraving on speed and cost per piece. Laser engraving leather or fabric is great for one-off custom work. Repeat production? Screen printing wins. (Surprise, surprise: the “Laser does everything” pitch has a gap.)
Where I'd spend next
If I had to do the purchase again, I would still buy the xTool F1 first. The modular design lets you add accessories, and the software is approachable enough that our product team does not need me to run it. But I would buy the screen printing setup earlier. We postponed it because screen printing felt old-school. That was a mistake.
As for automation? Wait until the monthly volume justifies it. If a machine sits idle more than half the day, you are paying for an expensive doorstop. In our 2024 context, fiber laser automation would have been a waste. In 2026, maybe not.
Honest caveats
I am not a laser engineer. I am the buyer who reads manuals and pesters vendors. Some things I still do not fully understand, like why wattage sells better than beam quality. My best guess is watts are easier to compare. If anyone has a better explanation, I would love to hear it.

And one more thing: “better” depends on your tolerances. If you need deep engraving on steel every day, the SLTL Elite or a similar industrial fiber laser is likely the right answer. If you need a dozen marked parts a week plus customized wood gifts, the xTool F1 is enough. Both can be true.
