What I'd buy if the checklist pointed to xTool
I'm a procurement manager at a 12-person custom fabrication and apparel shop. Over the past six years, I've tracked roughly $180,000 in equipment, consumables, and repair invoices. When the owner mentions a new laser or printer, I don't wave it through. I run the checklist first.

The most expensive mistake I see in procurement is comparing base-unit prices. From the outside, the lower quote looks like the lower cost. The reality is that almost nobody runs a bare machine.
Your total cost of ownership includes the machine, shipping, rotary attachment, air assist or compressor, fume extraction, ventilation, consumables, software, a spare parts kit, installation, and operator training. 3. Know the difference between CO2, diode, and fiber
Material determines the laser type. CO2 lasers are strong on wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and many non-metal materials. Diode lasers handle a narrower range but are cheaper and good for starter work. Fiber lasers mark metals and some plastics without relying on coatings. That's why a fiber laser engraver xTool can be a better fit for a job shop that works with aluminum, stainless, or steel parts.
Let me address a phrase that shows up in analytics: 'CO2 laser brown skin.' It can mean two completely different things. If you mean using a CO2 laser to cut or engrave brown kraft, brown leather, or brown wood, that's a normal material job. If you mean skin resurfacing on brown skin, that's a medical issue. My rule is simple: run at least one sample batch of the actual garments you'll sell, through a machine that you can test or borrow, and count the full consumables used. 5. If you cut heavy metal, compare plasma and industrial fiber, not a desktop xTool
This is where honest limitations matter. An xTool desktop fiber laser is a marking and light-cutting tool. It is not a plate cutting machine. If someone asks 'can xTool cut steel plate?' the honest answer is: not the way you mean. For plate steel, you need a CNC plasma or a high-power fiber system.
Searching for a 10kw fiber laser usually means you want industrial cutting speed and edge quality on thick metal. A 10kw fiber laser can do that, but it's a production investment that requires three-phase power, process gases, a chiller, and serious operator training. For many metal shops, 10kw is overkill.
If you're in Australia and the main job is cutting mild steel plate, search for 'plasma cutter Perth' or similar local terms. The local supplier's support and consumables are part of the total cost. A plasma cutter can be lower total cost than a fiber laser for thick steel, at the trade-off of edge quality and speed. Choose based on your parts, not on what makes a better Instagram video.
Checkpoint: If your material is thicker than your desktop machine's specified cutting range, stop looking at desktop machines.
6. Do a site audit before you sign the quote
The step I see skipped most often is installation. We didn't have a formal site audit process in my shop until the second laser arrived and we found out the circuit breakers were too small. That cost us an electrician and a day of downtime before the machine ever made a part.
Before any xTool, apparel printer, or industrial machine arrives, confirm voltage, amperage, exhaust routing, fume filter or outside venting, compressed air if needed, fire extinguisher, eye protection, and operator training. No process is too simple. Check whether the floor can take the weight and whether the moving parts clear the walls.

If the material list says mixed small-batch engraving and cutting, and the total cost of ownership works in your spreadsheet, an xTool desktop laser is a reasonable first step. If apparel runs are steady, the xTool apparel line can earn its floor space. I recommend those tools for shops that value flexibility over volume. But if your volume stays high and predictable, buy production equipment or outsource it. No machine is 'best'; the right machine is the one your jobs actually need.
There's something satisfying about a machine that pays for itself because the checklist was boring and expensive to run. That's the goal. Not a flashy unboxing, a profitable next year.
